The Twelve and Peter

- if we look at Church AS A DYNAMIC FOUNDING, where are these two found in the church today?

- the twelve CONTINUES
- APOSTOLIC COLLEGE
- collectivity
- organized body
- college of Bishops

-the college of Bishops suceeds to the twelve apostolic college
- as of the moment 3872 bishops
- THE SUCCESSOR IS NOT IN THE NUMBER BUT AS THE BODY, AS TEH COLLEGE
-that's APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION

THE BISHOPS
-trace back his leneage and you'll never find that they are linked to one of the particular apostles.
-they suceed as a college

Website: Catholic Heirarchy

NOTE: INDIVIDUAL BISHOPS DO NOT SUCEED TO INDIVIDUAL APOSTLES
-the college have the authentic handing on

COLLEGIALITY

PETER
--Pope and sucessor

WHAT IS THE REALTIONSHIP B/w the POPE and the COLLEGE OF BISHOPS
Is it like being a general in Military?
-NO

- the pope in the college of bishops is both head and member
-therefore he is to function as the member of the college while at the same time leading it but in consultation with other bishops
- the power is not absolute, not like provincial offices
-they are to operate as a COLLECTIVITY

COLLEGIALITY
-doesnt mean that the pope is outside or above the bishops

Clarification on both elements happens in the last 2 general councils of teh church

Vat. 1 1861-70 Infalliability / role
Vat II 1962-65 collegiality

Vat 1 did not finish collegiality

1 Cor 15:5
-when PAul is presenting the evidence for resurrection, he presents first the apperance of Jesus to Peter and the Twelve

- this emans that AT THE VERY HEART OF BEING CHURCH, IS TO GIVE WITNESS TO THE GLORIFIED AND RISEN WORLD
-theological point
