4. The Last Supper

In the Sacred Scriptures, there are Institution Narratives (IN) in the Gospels
- Jesus establishes the Eucharist
-Explicitly are found
Mt 26:26-29
Mk 14:22-25
Lk 22:14-20
- in John there is no institution narrative
-however the Last Supper discourse replaces the institution narratives
-5 full chapters 13 to 17

COVENANT - MEMORIAL - COMMUNITY

COVENANT
- in the IN
, the word COVENANT appears as part of the narratives and taken over into our Eucharistic Celebrations... "this is the cup of my blood, the new and everlasting covenant....

-TWO KEY ELEMENTS:
1. terms of the covenant
word of God
commandment
commitment
2. Sacrificial shedding of blood to seal the covenant

In Exodus 19:3-8 Moses sets up before the asembly, reach out the terms of the covenant, and the promise goes further...
"you will be my people and I will be your God."

Ex 24:3-8 Moses takes the big bowl of blood and on the altar set up on a pillar, he sprinkles on the altar and the people, sementing the covenant

Covenant - law/terms
- blood

- the Law of the Covenant is found in John 15:17 - the LAw of love. "Love one another as I have loved you."
-"you must love as I have loved you."

AS I

Blood - the new covenant is no longer in the blood of goats, its already in the blood of Christ
-we are the new and people of God

"THE CHURCH MAKES THE EUCHARIST AND THE EUCHARIST MAKES THE CHURCH."

MEMORIAL
-something to be repeated, remembered
-1 Cor 11:23-26
this is what i received from the Lord and now i pass it on to you
-remembering is an inadequate word
- ANAMNESIS
- remembering something that makes it actually presence
- as we remember the bread and wine here present becomes the reality
- in the process of remembering it becomes a reality

Represent - RE-PRESENT, make present again the acts that we are describing
- Jesus words have a vision that this will be a continous action that the community will do
- meet in their homes in a special meal
- this meal began to differentiate (Acts 2:42-47) from the Jews
- remember and keep alive the meaning

Eucharist - is always a sacrament in 3 tenses
- past, present, and future
- we remeber, but it becomes a present reality in our life and this is a fortasting promise for what is to come

"Christ ahs died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again."

"the people of God makes the eucharist and the eucharist makes the people of God.

RE MEMBER - Re member
- we are making members of the church
- a process of incorporating us again in this sacred act that we go through

WE ARE A RE-MEMBERING PEOPLE

Feullet (french Biblical Exegete)
- John 17
- the preistly prayer of Christ

- the gift of ordination is to precisely to have an officially designated person in the church whose task is to remember
- to call people to remember most specifically to call people to remember Christ action for us.

COMMUNITY
-OT roots
-Qehal (people summoned by God)
-when translated to Greek:

ek-kaleo
ek -meaning OUT
Kaleo meaning to call

ek-kaleo therefore means - to acll out (from all the places, you are summoned, you will be my special people)
-process of invitation and summoning
-become ekkleosia
-and in LAtin ECCLESIA
- in the modern romance became IGLESI (spanish) and L'eglise (French)

WHO is CHURCH - PEOPLE CALLED OUT TO BECOME A COMMUNITY THAT HEAR THE WORD OF GOD AND RESPOND THE COVENANT
