-Peter will have that role

HISTORICAL CAREER of PETER
* Simon ... Ministry of Jesus
-one of the disciples
-very prominent, closely companion of Jesus
-he probably made a confession of Jesus' identity
-he failed partially to understand Jesus

Simon in the Early Church
-become popular as Cephas
-recorded in the appearance of Risen Christ 1Cor 15:5
-he had a missionary career
-shown taking a theological position Acts 15

IMAGES OF PETER in NT Thought

- he is the great Christian fishermen, a missionary
-he is Shepherd of the sheep
-he is the Christian MArtyr
-he is the receiver of Special Revelation
-the confessor of the true Christian Faith
-guardian of Faith against false teaching
-scriptures have a clear image - a WEAK AND SINFUL MAN
-Peter and the Rooster (Early Church)

-this is a good background to understand the role of the PAPACY
-the pope is the ...... (some with Peter)
-if we understand the role of Peter's images, it offers better relation with other Christians

2. The Choice of the Twelve

Mk 1:16 Call of disciples

Background:
- in Jesus time, Jewish Rabi would be chosen by the disciple
-therefore Saul chose Gamelion...?
Jesus starts differntly, he calls the disciples
- its definitive, true reality and has a symbolic value
-symbolic of the 12 tribes of Israel
-God is establishing a new people
-Jesus wants to show a continuity of israel and the church
-between the old and new covenant
-they will become Jesus' intimate companion
-receive special teaching and special experiences

METHOD AND PURPOSE OF ELECTION
Mk 3:13-19 Jesus appoints the 12 / Appointment of the 12

Summoned those whom he wanted
he apointed the 12
- he is using his authority

To be his constant companion (relationships)
He sent them out to preach/ proclaim
and to drive away all the enemies of the Kingdom

Miracles - God's rule in people's lives

The choice and institution of the 12 and in head life of Jesus, we see Christ moving toward the formation and institution of the church. he will confide with his desciples the message of the Father.Later he would send the Hosly Spirit, the messenger. the word commands them to heal.

Lk 9:1-3

Characteristics of the Disciples of Jesus
1. called by Jesus
2. personal invitation
3. a call to a continous relationship
4. reflecting upon what it means DISCIPLE - "Dicens" - a learner
5. the ordinaryness of teh disciples
6. they are to form a community
7. Jesus will be their master
8. He will share his mission with them
9. Share his cross
10. rehabilitated sinners - recognize their frailty / imperfections

1. Preaching of the Kingdom

-continue after the founding of the Church
-new mode of god's salvation being offered to humanity

(see Christology Notes for KINGDOM OF GOD)

-church as people of God - does it mean the same as Israel?
- the church is the new, final people of God
- the covenant is no longer sealed in the blood of goats and calf but already in the bllod of Christ

- the Church tasks is to continue the proclamation of the Kingdom
- a kingdom of truth and life, holiness and grace, justice , love and peace

God's active presence is wider than the church

WORLD - KINGDOM - CHURCH

The world is a greater reality and yet not all people in the world are part of the kingdom, or their life is not centered in God's communion in their life (we have freedom). The church - can have many people who belong and do not belong to it

/* kosuke Koyana
- our theology is always limited
-we canot capture all of theology, or God in theology (water buffalo theology)
- only a stammering epression of the full reality of God (statering theology)

DID JESUS FOUND THE CHURCH?

Did he found the Church? YES and NO

We cannot be simplistic with Peter and that alone is the foundation of the church.

The entire life, mission, ministry, person of Jesus sent from the Father and sending of the Holy spirit is the foundation of the church.

6 Key Aspects of the Foundation

1. Preaching of the Kingdom of God
2. Call of the Disciples - calling the new people of God
3. Promise to Peter
4. LAst Supper
5. Death and Resurrection
6. Pentecost - Gift of the Holy Spirit

KROEGER's own Statement: The 6 are part of the FOUNDATION but THEY ARE LIVING and CONTINUING foundation of the church.

7. Escathological Nature of the Church
8. de Beata Maria Virgene Dei para in Mysterio Christi et Ecclesiae (About the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God in the mystery of Christ and the church)

II. FATHERS OF THE CHURCH

1. Imagery
the Fathers of the church loved to use images to describe the church

e.g. people, body, spouse, vineyard, temple

2. General Themes

- the FC did not have a total, well developed ecclesiology that was used to address one thing and another
e.g. action of the HS
Eucharist
Spiritual Maternity of the Church
Peace and Concord between the local churches
Collegiality of the Episcopate
The POpe as the guardian of the CHARITY for the UNIVERSAL CHURCH

3. Specific Clarifications

e.g Ireneus
Cyprian
Catholicity of the Church
Sacramental Character - Augustine
VAlidity of the Sacramental act, independent of the personal holiness of the minister.

III. MIDDLE AGES to TRENT (1545-1563)

- the age of the formation of treateases
- explanation of very specific points
e.g. Heresies
Treatises

- the treatises were helpful but it was not a total ecclesiology. It is sometimes a bit polemical

IV THEOLOGICAL PROGRESS (19th & 20th)

- a renewal of theology is happening and JOHAN ADAM MOEHLER is considered as the FATHER OF MODERN ECCLESIOLOGY (Tubigen)

HANS KUNG - same school with Moehler

V. VATICAN II

VI. POST VATICAN II DEVELOPMENTS

Episcopal Conferences
Continental Federations
Local Church Synods
eg PCP II
NSPC

Growth of theology of local churches
Renewed Theology of Mission
Inculturation
-came out in Nov. 1970 with the visit of Paul VI in Manila
Inter-Religious Dialogue (IRD)

Let's appreciate the richness of the treasures that includes in the ecclesiology today.

The Church
- is like a living organism
- is not a MUSEUM PIECE rather think of the church as constantly flowering - John XXIII

YOu and I, founded on the apostles, we are the living stones of this growing edifice of the church.

5. A REMINDER THAT WE ARE DOING THEOLOGY

Fides Quaerens Intellectum

GOAL: Comprehensive Self-Image of the Church

Ecclesia Dei, quid decis de tespea?

"Church of God, what do you say of your very self?

Introductory Class 11.13.07 (4)

4. OUR THEOLOGY ALWAYS HAS TO BE LINKED INTO REALITY (Concrete Experiences)

Our theology about the church comes after our experience of Church

Ecclesiology - Is a reflection of lived experience
- A theory about a practice
- should link our vision of church into reality and find concrete expression in our daily living

Read Chapter 1 - Becoming Local Church

1995 CWO was established
- forerunner of the CBCP

1970 Paul VI in Manila
1972 Federation of Asian Bishop's Conference (FABC)
1974 1st Plenary Assembly

Introductory Class 11.13.07 (3)

ECCLESSIA SEMPER REFORMANDA
(the church always to be renewed, converted, changed, updated, renovated)

- on going
- necessary

-we are a church that always is in need of change, conversion

Aggiornamento - giorno
- bring the church into our present day, present reality
-profound inner renewal of the church

A Christian is someone who is SIMUL JUSTUS ET PECCATUR

Simul - simultaneously (at the same time, in the same reality)
Justus - just
- holy, filled with the spirit, true followers of the Word of God
Peccator - sinner

In the very same identity holiness and sinfulness

"We are God's Holy and Sinful People."

If this is the reality, the church then need change and renewal... so that the JUSTUS wil dominate the PECATUR

Introductory Class 11.13.07 (2)

- 17 decided (WW1) to ecumenism
-35 WWII 1939 grafted to be a military chaplain
-became a prisoner of war

- if we are going to remove the church, we have to do RESSOURCEMENT

the renewal of the church will come if we go back to the scriptures, a deep study of the tradition and the fathers of the church

TRADITION

AUTHENTIC - living handing on the living faith
TRADITIONALISM - some peopel who wants to go back to the good old days

trado tradere - effectively communicate to the next generation

ECCLESIAM SUAM (His Church)
- tell us what Paul VI sees as the importance of ecclesiology #10 "this is the..."

4 KEY ELEMENTS
1. Origin
2. Nature
3. Mission
4. Ultimate Destiny

ECCLESIOLOGY is a teaching that is never sufficiently understood

Recent way of understanding the Church:
The church as a community in dialogue
living realationship
exchange of ideas
appreciating one another

Operates in Four Levels

Center: Roman CAtholic Church itself (LG)
2: Ecumenism (UR)
Inter-Faith Dialogue (NA)
Entire World (GS)

VATICAN II was a COUNCIL OF THE CHURCH ABOUT THE CHURCH

The central theme: Renewed Awareness... Who are we as church>?

What is happening here is DIALOGUE of SALAVTION
God is working out in and through dialogue
